Volunteer Jennifer Loughran of Coal City was awarded the Joni Hilger Volunteer of the Year Award at the Timbers of Shorewood's Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon held during National Volunteer Week on Thursday, April 21, at the Timbers, 1100 North River Road, Shorewood.

The award is named for Joni Hilger who was a beloved volunteer at the Timbers. In 2020, she was selected as the Volunteer of the Year, but because of COVID-19 restrictions, the presentation did not take place. Tragically, Joni passed away.

On May 8, 2021, the Volunteer of the Year award was finally presented to Joni's family, an award that, from that day forward, became known as the "Joni Hilger Volunteer of the Year Award."

The selection of Jennifer Loughran was based on what she gives the residents in terms of support, encouragement, and engagement. She is a social worker that became acquainted with the Timbers through her work with Inspire Senior Care.

"Jennifer has truly been a blessing with her contagious smile, positive attitude, and upbeat personality," said Amy Odell, director of activities at the Timbers. "The time Jennifer dedicates has truly made a positive impact on the lives of the residents at the Timbers."

An outgoing person, Loughran is most involved in the activities department. She not only has creative ideas, but she also follows through with set up, organizing, and take-down.

"I began volunteering with the Timbers at the peak of COVID-19, when the residents were isolated from family and friends," Loughran said. "This is what inspired me to do all I could to make residents smile, laugh, and feel loved. Volunteering has also allowed me to teach my children at young ages the importance and value of caring for and befriending our elders."

April is National Volunteer Month, a month when people celebrate the work that volunteers do year-round. Organizations across the country are recognizing their volunteers for helping them achieve their mission. April became National Volunteer Month in 1991 as part of President George H. W. Bush's 1000 Points of Light campaign.
