Downers Grove Park District BBQ Bolt Run/Walk offers end-of-summer fun on Aug. 29

The Downers Grove Park District will host the BBQ Bolt Run/Walk at 8AM on Saturday, Aug. 29. Starting and finishing at McCollum Park in Downers Grove, the BBQ Bolt will provide an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate the end of summer with fitness. The event offers racers two course options—5K or 1-mile distances—plus a new virtual option. McCollum Park is located at 6801 Main Street in Downers Grove.

The safety of racers and staff will be the top priority, therefore, the race will follow CDC recommendations and DCEO guidelines under the Restore Illinois Plan to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The race will feature staggered starts to manage group sizes and meet social distancing requirements. Racers will be required to wear face coverings while not actively running or walking. The post-race distribution of food and beverages will be modified.

Darby Beasley, the District’s Sponsorship and Community Events Specialist, is the BBQ Bolt Run/Walk Coordinator.

“The Downers Grove Park District is thrilled offer this opportunity for families to enjoy some outdoor exercise this summer. We are working diligently to create a safe, enjoyable experience while following the state guidelines. For those who might not be ready for an in-person event, we have developed a virtual race option for families,” said Beasley.

Race registration is available through Aug. 27 online only at bbqbolt.org. Groups of four or more can create a team and receive a $5 discount per person. Virtual racers will receive information on how to participate using a mobile app.

All racers (onsite and virtual) will receive a finisher medal, short-sleeve tech shirt and virtual goodie bag. 5K and 1-mile racers who participate onsite will receive a to-go lunch with a sandwich and side catered by Alfie’s BBQ. For the onsite 5K course, awards will be given to the overall top 3 male and female finishers in addition to age category awards for the top 3 male and female finishers. No awards given for 1-mile or virtual races.

Downers Grove Park District is seeking volunteers to assist with the success of the race. All volunteers will receive complimentary breakfast snack and a volunteer T-shirt. View volunteer roles and sign up at bbqbolt.org.

The BBQ Bolt supports Downers Grove Park District’s inclusion services, through SEASPAR (South East Association for Special Parks and Recreation), for people with disabilities who want to participate in a park district program or activity.

This event is sponsored BMO Harris Bank, Homelight, Roots Be Gone, True Balance Karate, Two Men and a Truck and Alfie’s BBQ. Sponsorship packages provide local businesses with the opportunity to engage and support the community. For more information, contact Darby Beasley at [email protected].
