Firefighters rescue boy's birthday party

Firefighters fought each other with Nerf guns, waded through pits of foam blocks and jumped and bounced around with Dominick

Plainfield firefighters came to the rescue for a boy's birthday last week.

On the afternoon of Nov. 16, one firefighter's family was preparing to leave a birthday party at GymQuest, 14511 S. VanDyke Road.

"They were leaving when a woman asked (the firefighter's wife) if the kids could stick around a play a little more because no guests had come to the next party," Chief Jon Stratton said.

Dominick, who was turning 7, appeared dejected at the lack of attendance, and a plan was formed.

The woman called her husband, who notified his lieutenant, who notified the battalion chief, who notified Stratton.

A short time later, 14 Plainfield firefighters showed up to play with the birthday boy.

"GymQuest is near the station, so we had everything covered," said Stratton, who also attended.

Firefighters fought each other with Nerf guns, waded through pits of foam blocks and jumped and bounced around with Dominick.

"Yeah, I guess that was the physical fitness activity for the shift," Stratton said. "It was a chance to help out someone in the community in a different way, but we enjoyed it."
