Defending Class 5A State Champion Hilltoppers start fast - hand Mt. Zion first loss of season

In their IHSA Class 5A second-round playoff game with undefeated Mt. Zion on Saturday, the defending

Class 5A State Champions from Joliet Catholic Academy got off to a quick start.

The Hilltoppers opened up a 27-0 lead at the half and cruised to a 27-14 victory. With the win, the Hilltoppers (8-3) will host the Indians of Mascoutah (8-3) at Memorial Stadium next Saturday in a Class 5A Elite 8 quarterfinal game.

Two minutes into the game, Hilltopper sophomore quarterback Aidan Voss connected with senior wide receiver John Ersham for a touchdown and after a PAT from placekicker Jake Dixon, the Hill led 7-0.

Voss connected with Kenyetta Williams for a touchdown extending the Hilltopper lead to 14-0 after one quarter.

Williams would electrify the Hilltopper crowd and race 83-yards for six and a 20-0 Hilltopper lead in the second quarter.

Voss scored from one-yard out to make it 27-0 Hilltoppers at the half.

The previously unbeaten Braves (10-1) scored two third-quarter touchdowns to close to within 27-14.
