Students and the community can explore alternative energy career prospects and learn how to prepare to become part of this growing and dynamic field Thursday, Nov. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Oakton Community College's Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.

"Power Up: Exploring Alternative Energy Careers," is presented by Oakton's Center for Promoting STEM and the Sustainability Center with generous funding from the Illinois Green Economy Network. The fair showcases opportunities in the booming renewable energy field. According to Clean Jobs America, more than 2.5 million Americans are currently employed in this field and a six percent job growth is expected by the end of 2019.

"Attending this fair is an important way for students to learn about these types of career opportunities and what it takes to pursue those jobs," Co-Director and Coordinator for Promoting STEM Gloria Liu says. "This event may also interest anyone looking to switch careers and find job opportunities in this growing field that benefits the Earth."

A panel presentation "Building a Career in Alternative Energy and Related Fields: Past, Present, Future" will be held from 9:10-10:30 a.m. Panelists include representatives from companies GRNE Solar, Verde Energy Efficiency Experts, All Bright Solar and ComEd.

The event also includes a walking tour of Oakton's LEED Gold certified Margaret Burke Lee Science and Health Careers Center. Throughout the day participants can attend sessions on various topics such as the solar industry, electrical engineering, energy efficient programs, ethical implications of energy choices and expectations in the growth of alternative energy careers.
