State Rep. Dagmara “Dee” Avelar, D-Bolingbrook, is reminding constituents in need to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP helps low-income households pay for home energy services such as heating and electricity.

“As summer winds down and temperatures begin to drop, home heating becomes even more important for people to live safely and comfortably,” Avelar said. “All families deserve adequate heating and access to other energy services, no matter their financial status or other circumstances. LIHEAP expands access to these vital services so that everyone can access the energy they need.”

The application period for LIHEAP begins Sept. 1, 2022 and closes on May 31, 2023 or until funding is exhausted. Households with a combined income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level for the 30 days preceding the application process may be eligible to receive assistance. Renters who spend more than 30% of their income on rent and whose heat or electricity is included in their rent may be eligible as well.

“The current inflation may make it harder for families to afford heat and electricity, however, help is available. I encourage everyone in need to apply for LIHEAP as soon as possible,” said Avelar. “I will always work to support programs like LIHEAP that directly benefit the working families in our community.”
