Washington Junior High students take home second place at local math competition

Congratulations to the student math team from Washington Junior High School who won overall

second place at the Joliet West High School Mu Alpha Theta Mid High Math Competition. In

addition to Washington, seven local junior high schools, including Dirksen, Gompers, and Hufford

Junior High Schools, competed in the contest. Students were judged in a variety of areas including

fractions, formulas, geometry, trigonometry, mental math and segments.

The seventh and eighth grade students on the winning Washington team included McKinzie

Anderson, Jesus Avila, Joseph Awinongya, David Bottia-Forero, Raeann Burzawa, Charon Cage,

Iyanna Daniels, LaNiyah Daniels, Andy Granados, Aaron Guzman, Kevin Guzman, Dalyssah

Guzman-Calderon, Valeria Hernandez, Emma Hoffman, Angelina Juarez, Isaiah Kan, Julian

Landeros, Jorge Martin, Jose Martinez, Kylian McKenzie, Natalie Pina, Audrey Rodriguez,


Gabriela Ruiz-Sanchez, Marco Sanchez, Makyah Stallings, Ruby Standfield, Derrick Vargas, and

Mickey Webber. The team was coached by teachers Caris Duda and Annie Walker.

In addition to placing second place overall, a team of Washington eighth grade students scored first

in the group competition. Also winning first place ribbons was a seventh grade team from Dirksen

Junior High for factors and an eighth grade Dirksen team for mental math. The competition was

hosted by the Joliet West High School Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society.
