Plainfield has approved a new salon business in the downtown area. On Dec. 2, the village board unanimously approved permitting Salon Suites to operate in the former's doctor's office located at 24016 W. Main Street. Cynthia Payne applied for the permit.

"It will be a one-of-a-kind luxury boutique suite and single chair rental concept for independent stylists and other salon professionals," Payne wrote in documentation submitted to the village. Hair stylists, barbers, estheticians, massage therapists, nail technicians and makeup artists are expected to occupy the building. Proposals submitted to the village's Plan Commission show Salon Suites will divide the building into 15 private suites ranging from 70 to 212 square feet. There will also be an open space of 480 square feet with nine individual chairs for lease. Each suite will have a shampoo bowl and chair, storage cabinet, full-length mirror, tool cart and private sink. Though stylists will operate independently, the business expects operating hours will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

"The applicant has submitted an elevation plan for the planned building renovations to convert the character of the building from a doctor's office to a salon," Yuchen Ding, Associate Planner, wrote to trustees. "The applicant has proposed to remove the existing mansard roof in the front and extend up the brick wall with a limestone cap."

The existing shingles will be replaced with black shingles, the bricks on the walls will be repainted white and the existing gate at the front entrance will be removed, Ding wrote. The parking lot will also be reconfigured to accommodate up to 27 vehicles. Renovations are scheduled to be completed by March.
